I have a new set of airlocks and the one part with the O ring is hard to insert or remove. At times, I have to use craft pliers to pull the fitting
from the other part with the gray push clip. See photo. Yes, I have that gray push button pushed in when I try to connect/disconnect them.

Try some Vaseline on the o-ring and push it inward before you squeeze the release. Maybe that will help. By pushing it in and then squeezing the release it will make the disengagement clean and shouldn’t hang up on the inserted part.
